Animal Habitats

April 26, 2017

“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.” Dr. Maria Montessori

Children learn and retain best when things are hands-on in an environment that has been prepared for them to experience and be a part of.  In one of our Science Exploration class this month we focused on animal habitats.  Students were read a story describing what's it like to be a fish. We then identified what they know and wanted to know about habitats.  For  this we used a Venn diagram to identify where animals live.  We focused on land and sea animals.  We then created some sensory boxes to represent some of the animal habits we were focusing on. The children were then asked to place animals in their specific habitats. The afternoon concluded with creating our very own "Fish in a Bag" complete with a gummy fish in ocean water (blue slime).
